Stem Connect
Open-access fibre network

Looking for Vumatel fibre at your business address?

Vumatel is one of South Africa's largest fibre networks, but whether it is at your building is an address question, not a suburb question. Below: what Vumatel is, where it is known to reach, how to check your own address, and what to do if it is not there.

Stem Connect can confirm what business connectivity is deliverable at that same address: fibre first, then wireless or LTE where fibre is not feasible or the lead time does not fit.

Vumatel in brief

What Vumatel is

Vumatel is an open-access fibre network operator. It builds and owns the fibre in the street and to the premises, and it does not sell internet to end users itself. Internet service providers (ISPs) buy access to the network and sell their own packages over it, which is why several ISPs can advertise Vumatel fibre at different prices over the same physical line.

It began in Johannesburg and has grown into one of the largest fibre networks in the country by homes passed. Whether it reaches a particular business address is worth checking rather than assuming either way: a shop or small office on a connected suburban street may well be passed, while business parks and city-centre buildings are often served by other networks or by a dedicated line.

Compared with the other networks people search for: Octotel is concentrated in the Western Cape, Frogfoot and MetroFibre are also open-access fibre operators with their own footprints, and Skywire is a different technology altogether, fixed wireless rather than fibre.

Known coverage

Known coverage is concentrated in the larger metros. It includes suburbs of:

  • • Gauteng: Johannesburg and Pretoria
  • • Western Cape: Cape Town
  • • KwaZulu-Natal: the Durban area

Coverage is street by street. Within a covered suburb some streets, complexes and buildings are not connected. Treat this list as where to look, not as a promise for your address.

Coverage information last reviewed October 2026.

Stem Connect is independent of Vumatel. We do not sell Vumatel services, and this page is not provided by or on behalf of Vumatel. The name is used here only to describe the network you searched for.

Check it yourself

How to check Vumatel availability at your address

You do not need to go through anyone to find out. The network, and any ISP that sells over it, can tell you.

  • • Use the coverage check on Vumatel's own website and enter your street address. Going direct to the network is a perfectly good way to start.
  • • Or use the coverage checker of any ISP that sells over the network. It will usually show the same result and which packages that ISP offers.
  • • Note whether the result says the address is connected, passed, or only planned. Planned does not come with a date you can plan around.
  • • If you rent, ask your landlord or building manager before ordering. In multi-tenant buildings and complexes, access to in-building fibre may need their permission.
Alternatives

If Vumatel is not at your address

A result of not covered does not mean there is no fibre. At a typical business address in a metro, these are the usual routes.

Another fibre network on the same street

Several open-access networks operate in the same metros, and many streets are passed by more than one. Check the others before assuming fibre is unavailable.

A dedicated business or enterprise line

Business fibre is usually a different product from a consumer line, with an uncontended or committed service level and faster fault response. It is often available in business parks and CBD buildings where consumer fibre is not.

Fixed wireless

A radio link to a nearby tower can be live faster than a fibre build and suits sites where fibre is not planned. Speed and latency depend on line of sight and tower load.

LTE or 5G

Useful as the primary line only where nothing better exists, and very useful as a failover alongside fibre so a cut cable does not stop the business.

Other networks: Octotel, MetroFibre, Frogfoot, Skywire. See also South Africa network and coverage.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions from businesses researching Vumatel.

Why do different ISPs advertise Vumatel at different prices?

Vumatel is a wholesale network. It builds the fibre, and each ISP sets its own packages, pricing, support and contract terms over it. The physical line is the same; the service wrapped around it is not, so compare ISPs on support and contention as well as price.

Does being in a covered suburb mean my building can connect?

Not necessarily. Coverage is decided street by street and often building by building. Check the exact address, and for a multi-tenant building check with the landlord as well.

Can I buy directly from Vumatel?

Vumatel's model is to sell access to ISPs rather than internet to end users. Its website is the right place to check coverage and to see which ISPs sell over the network at your address.

Is Stem Connect a Vumatel reseller?

No. Stem Connect is independent of Vumatel and does not sell Vumatel services. This page exists because many businesses start by searching for a network name when what they need is a reliable connection at a specific address. We look at what business connectivity is feasible at that address and tell you plainly what we can and cannot deliver there.

I already have Vumatel at my premises. Can you help with that line?

Support for an existing Vumatel service sits with the provider you buy it from, and we cannot fault-find or change a service we do not provide. If you want to compare it against what is feasible at the same address, send us the address and we will do that.

Availability and lead times are address-dependent. We confirm feasibility before any commitment.
