ADSL Fixed IP
What is it and why do I need it?

We have moved from an era where leased lines (Diginet) was the only proper connectivity method. We are now, however, in an era where we have a variety of connectivity options that are available, including ADSL.

In this article I will elaborate more on Fixed IP ADSL as this is a fantastic cost effective replacement for leased lines.

To start with, I will discuss what the differences between “ADSL with fixed IP” and “Uncapped ADSL with fixed IP” are. Sounds the same, right? Nope, there is a huge difference. Secondly, I will discuss the advantages of having a fixed IP on your network.

"ADSL with fixed IP” versus “Uncapped ADSL with fixed IP

The difference between a normal uncapped account and a fixed IP account is outlined below:

Advantages of ADSL with fixed IP:

  1. No need to configure dynamic DNS services since your connection will always be assigned a fixed IP address
  2. Ability to host your own dedicated services on your ADSL line
  3. Much faster than uncapped and the same speed as normal ADSL which can connect at up to 4MB/s
  4. More cost effective as the price starts from R400 for a 5Gig connection
  5. No fixed term contracts

 Disadvantages:

  1. It is a capped service
If you do not intend to exceed the 20Gig mark per month, then making use of uncapped is not a cost-effective decision. You need to weigh up speed versus the amount of traffic you expect to be using. There are scenarios where the size of the data outweighs the luxury of speed.

What is a static or fixed IP address, and why would you need one?

A static- or fixed IP address is a permanent numerical (binary) identifier associated with networking equipment for the purpose of locating and addressing these devices worldwide. These unique identifiers (IP addresses) allow other computers/networks to locate and communicate to your computer/network over the Internet.

Without an IP address you would not be able to interconnect with other computers/networks.

A fixed IP over ADSL is a cheaper alternative to Diginet lines, but still provides the same results.

Why would you need a fixed IP account?

  • To run your own mailserver (SMTP inbound)

  • To host your own webserver

  • To create a VPN as a cost effective ADSL solution

  • To run an FTP server – using File Transfer Protocol to transfer data files from one computer to another without having to mail the data

  • To remotely access your online applications such as accounting software etc.

  • To remotely access surveillance, video conferencing and similar services

  • To run proper VOIP solutions

With a static IP you could alleviate many hassles and connect to your office as if you were there in person!
